Busan Film Festival New Currents Competition

Two Korean films and two Indian films are in the main competition section of the new currents at the Busan International Film Festival. They are joined by one each from Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Germany.

The division has a proven track record of making important discoveries among new Asian films and directors.
Selected titles are eligible for multiple awards, including the New Currents Award, the FIPRESCI Award, the NETPAC Award, and the KB New Currents Audience Award.

The selection includes: “Ajooma” by Hu Shuming (Singapore-Korea); “Blue Again” from Thailand; Thapanee Loosuwan; “Hail to Hell” by Korean director Lim Oh-jeong; “Memento Mori: Earth” (in English), by Marcus Vo Manh Kong, Vietnam; “No End” directed by Nader Sifar and raising the flags of Germany, Iran and Turkey; “A Place Called Silence” (in English), by Sam Kuah of Malaysia; “Shivamma” from India’s Jaishankar Aryar; “One Thousand and One Nights” by Japanese director Kubota Nao; “A Wild Roomer” by Korean director Lee Jeong-hong. And Winter Within” directed by Amer Bashir, and staged as a co-production between India, France and Qatar.

The festival previously announced the participants for its new Jiseok section, an expansion of the previous Kim Jiseok Award selection, which will now also be competitive. It is scheduled to reveal its full lineup on Tuesday next week.

The festival will be held as an in-person event from October 5-14, 2022, at the Busan Film Center and other venues across the city. In 2020, the first year of the COVID pandemic, the festival served as a mini-event. Last year I was able to partially recover, but border controls meant that few foreign guests were able to participate.

More to track.
