Chris Rock: Will Smith Slap Happened After The Best Joke You’ve Ever Said

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle recently began their joint comedy tour in Liverpool, England at the M&S Bank Arena, and the two comedians stopped short as they addressed the Oscar 2022 incident where Will Smith slapped Rock in the face. Rock was presenting an award and making fun of Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, angering Will Smith because Pinkett Smith has alopecia. Rock said during the Liverpool set that he was slapped for a “nonsense joke” (via Daily Mail UK).

“Does this bullshit hurt?” said Rock. “The fuck hit me over a bullshit joke, the cutest joke I’ve ever said.”

The joke that Rock told the Academy Awards was: “Jada, I can’t wait for JI Jin 2 to come.” The comedian was referring to Demi Moore’s shaved head in the original “GI Jane.”

Chappelle went down hard on Smith during the Liverpool show, saying: “Will has made an impression of a perfectionist for 30 years, took off his mask and showed us that he’s as ugly as the rest of us. Whatever the consequences. … I hope he never wears his mask again, and leaves his true face. He breathes. I see myself in both legs.”

While Rock has yet to sit down for an official interview about the Oscar slap, he has spoken about the incident at several comedy shows after the Oscars.

“Anyone who says words hurt hasn’t been punched in the face,” Rock said at a July comedy show in New Jersey, adding, “I’m not a victim. Yeah, that shit hurts, damn. But I just ditched that shit and went to work.” The next day. I don’t go to the hospital for paper cutting.”

The Academy barred Smith from membership for 10 years because of the slap. The actor resigned from the organization before the ban was announced.

In a statement announcing his resignation from the Academy, Smith said, “The list of people I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dearest friends and loved ones, all attendees and global audiences at home. You betrayed the trust of the Academy. You denied the other nominees and winners the opportunity to celebrate and celebrate their exceptional work. Burn My heart.”
