On Monday night, Florence Poe and Olivia Wilde attended the world premiere of “Don’t Worry the Bold” at the Venice Film Festival, but they kept their distance – as if they weren’t even in the same movie together.
Pugh had skipped the film’s press conference earlier in the day. When the audience in Venice erupted in 4-minute applause for the film, Pugh—who was seated several seats away from Wilde—walked completely away from her director, confronting (and dancing) her colleague instead. Nick Kroll star.
The film appears to have been well received in Venice. The audience applauded during one of the more climactic scenes and the applause would have likely lasted longer if Pew hadn’t made her way out after about three minutes of clapping, prompting the rest of the cast – with Wilde at the end – to follow. “Don’t Worry Darling” marks Wilde’s second directorial effort and her follow-up to the Booksmart hack. Pugh and Styles play a newly married couple who live in an experimental and quaint utopia named Victory. Pugh’s character grows suspicious that her husband’s lucrative company–working on a top-secret project that promises to change the world–may be hiding disturbing secrets. Then everything collapses. “Booksmart” writer Katie Silberman wrote the script.
The drama followed “Don’t Worry, Baby” to Venice thanks to social media rumors claiming that Wilde and Pugh were at odds on set. Pugh missed the film’s press conference due to filming requirements for the second part of “Dune,” but arrived in Venice in time to walk the red carpet for the world premiere. Any chance of embarrassment on the carpet has been carefully calculated by the festival and Warner Bros. staff. Discovery, who gave the film’s main cast a healthy window between each red carpet appearance, thus avoiding any drama.
Wilde would descend first on the red carpet, followed by Styles and finally Pugh. Styles, whose light blue suit was surprisingly subdued for the singer and actor, was very attentive to the raucous fans—many of whom had lined up outside Sala Grande, in the sweltering heat, since the early hours of the morning.
With the “As It Was” singer busy signing autographs up and down the red carpet, Pugh made her stunning entry in an off-the-shoulder glossy bodysuit, smiling for the cameras and captivating enthusiastic fans. Like Styles, Pugh also took her time greeting and hugging fans, and taking selfies. At one time, she warmly embraced festival director Alberto Barbera, and said that it was her first time at the festival. She also gave “Don’t Worry Baby” producer Meri Yoon a long hug.
In between, the stars have joined forces with Warner Bros. Discovery and their co-stars Gemma Chan, Chris Pine and Nick Kroll. But apart from one photo with Wilde, the trio of Pugh, Wilde, and Styles were separated on the red carpet, surrounded at all times with their actors or other actors (Marisa Tomei gave Styles an especially warm reception).
“Florence is power,” Wilde said earlier in the day at a news conference in Venice when asked to “purify the air” about the rumours. “We are so grateful that she was able to make this happen tonight [for the red carpet] Despite being in production on “Dune”. I know, as a director, how upsetting it is to lose an actor even for a day, so I’m very grateful to her, and [‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve] to help us. And we’ll celebrate her work tonight. Reviews of “Don’t Worry Baby” outside of Venice were mixed with diverse Film critic Owen Gleiberman called it “more gaudy than convincing” with “an over-telegraphic and over-heavy plot plot”. Gleiberman garnered further praise for Pugh and Styles, writing the first “carried in the center of the film with a spark of passion that melts into the look of a cautious detective.” Meanwhile, Styles has a “healthy cunning that sets him apart as a natural screen actor”.
Screening of “Don’t Worry Baby” is out of competition. Often brought by Warner Bros. One of her big Oscar season titles goes to Venice, including Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s “A Star Is Born” (the out-of-competition premiere that ended with eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and a win for original song) and Joaquin Phoenix’ Joker. (A contest title that won the Golden Lion, earned 11 Oscar nominations and won two awards for actor and original score). Whether “Don’t Worry Baby” Could Go On at Warner Bros. The success of the festival has yet to be seen leading up to the Oscars.
Wilde told CinemaCon earlier this year that “Don’t Worry Baby” was inspired by psychological thrillers like “Deadly Attraction” and “Indecent Suggestion.” The director also cited “Inception,” “The Matrix,” and “The Truman Show” as sources of inspiration, saying the film is “a love letter to films that push the boundaries of our imagination.”
