CBI raids at my residences meant to malign me: Bengal Minister Ghatak!

Kolkata, Sep 7 (IANS) West Bengal Law Minister Malay Ghatak on Wednesday night called Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detectives’ daytime strikes on their homes deliberate, politically motivated and intended to condemn him.

Since Wednesday morning, CBI detectives have led long-distance raids on Ghatak’s five houses — three in Asansol in West Burdwan district and two in Kolkata.

“The CBI authorities conducted over seven hours of raids and search missions. They really look at each of the records. I could not go to the executive inquiry meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

All this activity was purposeful, awakened on the political level and aimed at condemning me. I believe that such an attempt to slander anyone will not happen in future,” Ghatak, who evaded various appeals from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the Coal shipment scam, told mediapersons.

He said CBI detectives kept different records from their homes during vacations. “The document related to the intricacies of my salary as a deputy, as well as the calculation of the civil servant’s book, was seized. They also kept a duplicate of my personal government forms. They also seized the SIM cards of my three mobile phones,” said Ghatak.

He further gave his reasons for evading various demands of the ED. “First of all, I was brought before the decisions of Asansol Municipality. Then I was called before the polling stations for the Asansol Lok Sabha demographic poll. However, I responded to each and every one that brought and understood why I could not go to New Delhi to face the appeal,” Ghatak said.

Asked if he would honor the fresh summons of the ED seeking his presence at his office in New Delhi on September 14, the Law Minister said he has not yet received any notice or email from the ED in this regard. “In any case, it will be difficult for me to go to Delhi on September 14 as the short session of the Assembly will begin from that day,” he said.
