Harris County Jail ordered to book inmates in faster after 13 Investigates analysis uncovered longer than mandated wait times!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Harris County Jail is in trouble because it took so long to get inmates into the prison. It’s a problem that 13 investigators uncovered just 10 days ago.

ABC13 sources confirmed that the prison issued a notice of non-compliance late Wednesday afternoon.

The video above is from the August 28, 2022 report by 13 investigators.

Rules governing Texas prisons require new inmates to arrive at an apartment unit within two days.

Our investigation found that there were prisoners waiting in these open detention areas for a longer time. According to our 13 investigators’ analysis, more than 550 of the 2,043 prisoners brought to prison in July had to wait longer than the imposed 48 hours.

Ted Oberg and our investigation team found that the problem was partly due to overcrowding and partly to slowdowns in the courtroom. Jail will be required to fix the problem and re-inspection.

If they can’t speed up the process, it could require sending more prisoners out of the county at a cost of several million dollars to taxpayers.

The Texas Prison Standards Commission did not confirm the notifications to the 13 investigators and had no comment. Accessed hours later, a spokesperson for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told ABC13 prison leadership would respond Thursday morning.
