Jobs near me: UPS announces 100k job openings for seasonal delivery rush!

New York — UPS plans to hire more than 100,000 workers to help deal with the holiday rush this season, in line with hiring in the past two years.

The festive season volumes usually start rising in October and stay high through January. While online shopping has slowed from the height of the pandemic, it is still well above historical standards.

UPS said Wednesday that there will be job openings for seasonal, full-time and part-time jobs, particularly package handlers, drivers and co-drivers. UPS promotes seasonal jobs as positions that can lead to year-round hiring. In recent years, according to UPS, nearly 35% of people hired for seasonal package processing jobs have landed permanent jobs.

Seasonal drivers with UPS start at $21 an hour, with tractor drivers making up to $35 an hour. Package wizard starting wages can range from $15 to $21 an hour.

The company continues to streamline the hiring process, and most hires only require 25 minutes — from filling out an online application to receiving an offer, according to Daniel McCusker-Reese, UPS’s head of human relations. That’s five minutes less than last year.

Reese started at UPS as a seasonal worker.

In an interview this week with The Associated Press, Reese said the job market remains as competitive as it was last year.

Employers added 315,000 jobs in August, about what economists had expected, down from an average of 487,000 jobs per month over the past year, according to a government report last week.

The unemployment rate was 3.7%, the highest level since February. But it increased for a healthy reason: hundreds of thousands of people returned to the labor market, and some did not immediately find work, which led to an increase in the number of unemployed people in the government.
