The Walking Dead Creator about the “relentlessly brutal” big death

Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Deluxe #46, in stores on Wednesday. In Creator Robert Kirkman the walking DeadSome characters are made to suffer. Wednesday’s 46th edition of the deluxe presentation, which is reprinting the Image Comics series in full color for the first time, continues from the end of last month’s cliffhanger: with Tyreese taken over by Woodbury. After leaving prison with Michonne to launch an attack against the retreating governor, Tyrese dies when the leader of Woodbury – who was using Michonne’s missing katana – beheads him due to Rick’s refusal to open the prison gates.

Kirkman wrote in a new comment to creators included in the latest version of Cutting room floor. “For me, that means a lot of pages. A lot of detail and really letting [artist Charlie Adlard] Get lost in the weeds showing every nook and cranny in the landscape.”

in Walking Dead Deluxe Number 46, first published in black and white in February 2008, Tyreese’s death is revealed in three pages—and for the first time, bloody decapitation has been colorized by Dave McCaig.

Nowadays, this might be a 6-page sequence, maybe even 8…so when I was re-reading this issue, I thought, ‘Here it comes’, and then…it ended up being three pages. Three pages?! Nuts?! Kirkman continues. “And yes, another writer might see this and say, ‘Yes, three pages is the most you can get out of that moment,’ and they might be right.”

In the original print of walking dead #46, Kirkman revealed that the death of fan favorite Tyrese has been planned “almost since its introduction” in issue #7 of 2004.

“While some of the deaths in the series are very sudden actions that I try not to think about (because they make things more spontaneous, like in real life), Therese’s death has been planned almost since its introduction. It’s always been something I’ve known and been working towards” Kirkman wrote at the time. “It would have a huge impact on the series and frankly… Nobody lives forever in this book. Nobody.”

Kirkman added, “So these things are going to last for the duration of the series. The characters have to die…that’s how the book works. So while I’m going to miss Tyreese, I have the luxury of knowing what lies ahead. From the crew in this book, so I know.” That things will be fine.”

Along with artist David Finch’s standard cover, Image Comics commemorated the passing with a recolored version of Adlard’s original cover and variants by Paolo Rivera and Julian Totino Tedesco.
