At an Apple event, the Cupertino company announced that you will no longer need to purchase an Apple Watch to use its exercise app, Apple Fitness Plus. This is the first time that users have been able to use the platform without owning one of the Apple smartwatches, making the app accessible to everyone.
Apple announced that “later this fall,” Fitness Plus will be available to all iPhone users. The app will be bundled with the Fitness app that comes with iOS 16, and users will have access to over 3,000 pre-recorded workouts. Fitness Plus users who don’t have an Apple Watch will still see the trainer’s on-screen instructions and interval timing, but the estimated calories burned will be used to allow them to make progress in their motion loop.
“Since its launch a little less than two years ago, we’ve heard incredible feedback from users about the difference Fitness+ is making in their lives. We’re thrilled to bring the award-winning service to more people than ever,” said Jay Blahnik, Vice President of Fitness Technologies at Apple. During Fitness+ will be available to all iPhone users later this fall, even if they don’t have an Apple Watch. “We can’t wait for more people around the world to stay motivated to achieve their fitness and wellness goals, and to live a healthier day.”
Apple also announced that starting September 12, Fitness Plus will introduce new seasons of Time to Walk and Time to Run with music from Mary J. Blige, The Rolling Stones and The Weeknd. There will also be a new yoga teacher joining the podium, Dice Iida-Klein, who will replace Dustin Brown, following his departure earlier this week.
On top of that, there will be a new set of exercises coming to the platform called Pilates for More than Your Core – a 20- and 30-minute Pilates workout designed to strengthen the entire body using only a resistance band.
Apple Fitness Plus costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year, and one subscription can be shared with up to five other family members, making the new change an affordable way to get the whole family moving for free.
If we’ve learned anything from closing in, it’s that you don’t need a membership or expensive gym equipment to add movement to your day – a set of the best adjustable dumbbells, two of the best resistance bands, and a decent workout app can get your heart rate up from the comfort of a room your living.
