September 11, 2001: Firsthand accounts from survivors of the 9/11 attacks!

New York City — The events of September 11, 2001 changed the world as we know it, from the way we live our daily lives to the mournful memories that honor the victims each year amid pledges to “never forget.”

In the video player above, watch first-hand accounts from those who were in Lower Manhattan on that fateful day, with commentary from then broadcaster Bill Beuter. (Warning: This contains images that some may find disturbing.)

Every year, the relatives of the victims descend on Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, and neither the events of that terrible day, the weeks, months, and years that followed, nor the memories of those killed by terrorists in hijacked planes are forgotten.

In addition, we remember all those who died of 9/11-related illnesses from their heroic act at Ground Zero and those who suffer today.

The events of 9/11 still shape American politics, politics, and everyday experiences in places from airports to office buildings, even if they are less permanently present in the public consciousness more than two decades later.

Commemoration of 9/11 is a familiar ritual now, but every year at ground zero, relatives of the victims broadcast the ceremony with personal messages of remembrance, inspiration and concern.
