An iPhone 14 Pro Max teardown video reveals what the new phone’s features look like in real life, including the new chip, larger camera, and a reworked Face ID module.
PBK . Reviews (Opens in a new tab) The new iPhone breaks it down piece by piece in a new YouTube video, showing us the differences compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Plus, watching people unlock seemingly impenetrable devices like the iPhone 14 is cool in its own way, so the video is worth watching even if you’re not interested in what a mmWave antenna looks like.
Once you take off the PBKreviews on the screen, it’s easy to spot the phone’s new chip, the A16 Bionic, thanks to its notable markings. So does the Taptic Engine, the unit that powers the iPhone’s vibrations and haptic feedback, at the bottom left. However, most of the other components are hidden under existing graphite pads to dissipate heat and prevent suffocation.
Digging deeper, PBKreviews found that the iPhone battery, which was recently confirmed by regulatory data, has a capacity of 4,323mAh. It’s smaller than the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 4,352 mAh battery, but that didn’t hurt the new model’s battery life. In fact, our iPhone 14 Pro Max test shows that the Pro Max lasts more than two hours on a single charge compared to the previous model, when running our custom web browsing-based battery test.
The most interesting thing we saw in the teardown is that the iPhone 14 Pro Max (technically) has an under-display camera. Apple has moved the proximity sensor, which was previously part of the family of sensors within the Face ID notch, below the display and below the main cameras, making the required aperture size smaller. This in turn allows for the new dynamic alert/activity alert/alert system for iPhone 14 Pro models.
The presence of non-camera sensors under the screen is not unique to the iPhone, although the best Android phones also hide their proximity sensors under the screen glass.
Three out of four of the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s cameras are still the same as in the last generation, but the 48MP main camera is new, and it’s clearly larger when flipping the phone over. No wonder Apple needed to expand the camera block size again for the iPhone 14 Pro models.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro and the regular iPhone 14 will all go on sale tomorrow (Friday, September 16), but iPhone 14 pre-orders are still open if you want to book a new device before that date. Sadly, the iPhone 14 Plus, Apple’s biggest new non-professional model, won’t be released until October.
