How ‘Barbarian’ Matthew Patrick Davis turned into a monster

brake alert: Don’t read unless you’ve seen “The Barbarian” in theaters now.

Actor Matthew Patrick Davis was flying blind when he signed on to play a wild mother in the 20th Century Studios horror movie “Barbarian.”

“There are usually performances that you can see, but nothing has been shown to me,” he explained, after he auditioned for the role on Zoom. “I was on a plane to Bulgaria and crossed my fingers, hoping that would be convincing.”

Tests to perfect the look of the transmother in Nightmare Suburban by writer and director Zack Krieger continued until the last minute. According to the actor, the first iteration was “a little bit cartoonish” because of her
The teeth and head are very large and the breasts “look like they had plastic surgery”. The process included comments from both the director and Davis himself. Happy with the result, he admitted, “It was a touch and a go, but the effects team in Bulgaria was excellent.”

Rather than the mom being a one-piece suit with other prosthetics added, the creativity ensured that the actor would be essentially nude with some application, or as Cregger called him, “the ass.”

“They tried making a mold of my butt during one of the makeup tests,” he recalls. “I had a weird plastic fake butt but it looked so bad, it was like, ‘We’ll get it with a thong.'” “

The film’s director asked Davis to shave his legs, arms, and eyebrows, but that’s where the performer drew the line. “I did a full body vet, and it was a fun experience I had never had before, but I asked if I couldn’t shave my eyebrows because he was going to cover them with prosthetics,” he explained.

The mother’s look consisted of a headdress with a wig attached to it and facial prosthetics, but “her nose is my nose and her mouth is my mouth.”

The impact teams used false teeth to push Davis’s mouth out and change the shape of his face. The mom’s appearance was improved by painting the body, adding scars, and making the actor’s body pale and covered in dirt — including under his toenails, which Davis says he “never could get out of.” Davis also got prescription contact lenses, a modification suggested by fellow actor Doug Jones, to change the color of his eyes.

However, some prosthetics have proven to be more problematic, such as the mother’s drooping breasts and “a strange strange thing covering the front of her crotch”.

All of these factors, and the nature of the prosthetics, were affected when Krieger and his team were able to film specific sequences. “They knew they’d be the most convincing at the start of the day when I got out of the makeup trailer,” Davis recalls. “Once I start moving or sweating you’ll start to see the seams, so for any close-up work they’ll make sure to do that first and all the wide shots at the end of the day.”

“They learned that perhaps the crotch piece was the least convincing,” he laughed. “They’d be like, ‘Matthew, if you jump into the hole, you can use your arm to cover his crotch, that would be cool. “
