Adnan Syed: A court hearing has been set for Monday in Baltimore!

Baltimore – A court hearing is scheduled for Monday in Baltimore to consider a request by prosecutors to overturn the 2000 murder conviction against Adnan Syed, whose case is chronicled on the hit podcast “Serial.”

The Baltimore Sun reported that Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Fain has scheduled the hearing for 2 p.m.

The development comes after Baltimore prosecutors filed a motion on Wednesday saying a lengthy investigation with the defense revealed new evidence that could undermine Syed’s conviction.

Syed spent more than 20 years in prison for strangling his ex-girlfriend, Hye Min Lee, who was 18 when she was murdered in 1999. Her body was found buried in a Baltimore park.

Syed, 42, has maintained his innocence for decades and captured the attention of millions in 2014 when the first season of the “serial” podcast focused on the case and cast doubt on some evidence, including cellphone tower data.

Prosecutors said in their argument that they did not assert Sayed’s innocence but that they lack confidence in the “fairness of the conviction” and recommended that he be released on his personal pledge or released on bail.

Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby said: “We believe it would be unfair to keep Mr Syed in custody while we continue to investigate the case with all we know now, when we are not confident in the outcome of the first trial.”

Under the motion in the case, Maryland law says prosecutors generally have 30 days after an overturned conviction to decide whether to drop charges or retrial, The Sun reported.
