TRIGGER Creator talks about the differences between Edgerunners and 2077

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Discover the universe created by video game producers at CD Projekt Red, where Studio TRIGGER animators bring to life the electric and technologically advanced future. Recently, Netflix took the opportunity to chat with the president of TRIGGER, Masahiko Otsuka, about the new anime adaptation while examining the approach the production house has taken when it comes to making the universe distinct from its video game entry. Surprisingly, the production schedule caused Edgerunners to differ completely from 2077.

In an interview with Netflix, the series director and co-creator of TRIGGER revealed that the production is on Edgerunners It started before the release of Cyberpunk 2077 moviewhich means that the animation house had to make this series their own since none of the animators had played the game before:

Well, the game wasn’t fully developed yet by the time we started production, so obviously no one had ever played the game. However, we received the documents for world building and were told CD Projekt Red would handle the base story so we assumed That we could start production with a script in hand. However, while we were preparing it, we started to encounter differences between the games and the anime and felt that some parts of the anime had to be changed.

We were following CD Projekt Red’s basic story but gradually started giving our opinions on how to translate that into anime.”

In a further discussion of the differences between anime and video game media, Otsuka also explained the dichotomy TRIGGER faced in shaping their own style in the Cyberpunk universe:

“While working on the anime, I felt it was important to create a flow to allow the audience to empathize more with the protagonist. The original plot was somewhat focused on the general mood. I understood their intent that would work on a game, but felt that the audience might not be able to On empathy when adapting it into animation.
