Google begins testing new Nest Hub Max update that removes extender functionality

Google’s smart home display, the Nest Hub Max, offers a useful feature that allows you to extend the effective range of some other Nest products. However, Google will drop support for this feature with the upcoming Smart Display update.

according to 9to5GoogleGoogle has started testing a new software update for the Nest Hub Max. The update (firmware version 7.20220419.2.164) prepares the smart home screen to support the Matter device and removes bridge/extended capabilities. After the update, users will not be able to use the Nest Hub Max to extend the range of devices such as the Nest Detect and Nest x Yale smart lock.

In case you are using your Nest Hub Max as a bridge/extender to other Nest devices, Google recommends resetting your connected devices to keep them connected after the update roll out. If this isn’t a viable solution for your household, Google is offering some users a free Nest Connect for effective scaling.

9to5Google It also notes that while the update brings support for the Nest Hub Max for Matter device, it may not actually make Matter devices available on the Google Home network. That should arrive later this year, along with support for Matter on Android devices.

In related news, Google recently introduced Matter device controls for some Android users. Controls appear inside a file Important devices and services swear in Devices and sharing Google Account Settings let you connect a new device, provide a toggle to show notifications when an unpaired Matter device is available nearby, and provide a list of linked Matter devices. These controls aren’t widely available at the moment, but we expect to roll them out more widely in the coming weeks.
