Detective Pikachu 2 may be coming soon per LinkedIn programmer

Nintendo has been pretty silent about the sequel to the original Detective Pikachu since its original announcement in 2019, but a high-ranking employee’s social media page suggests we might not have to wait any longer.

As I originally mentioned before Nintendo LiveSenior Programmer Jonathan Murphy LinkedIn The profile mentions the game and claims that its release date is approaching. According to Murphy’s profile, under the title of his inclusion as a Senior Programmer for Creatures Inc and the development division of Pokémon Trading Card Game, his work experience indicates that he “worked on one unreleased project and one on the verge of release, Detective Pikachu 2”. Murphy has held his current title since September 2017.

The original Detective Pikachu was released in early February 2016 on the Nintendo 3DS handheld system, introducing a talking Pikachu character that would help the player solve puzzles. Nintendo first announced its plans to make the game a sequel in 2019, the same year that Warner Bros. The game’s story is brought to the big screen in an early summer blockbuster starring Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu and the titular Justice Smith as his human partner, Tim.

The film adaptation, which shares many elements with the original game in the soon-to-be series, did well at the box office, grossing over $433 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, per Box Office Mojo. While the game was met with lukewarm criticism, the theatrical release nearly broke into the top three in our rating of the best video game-based movies of all time. To date, this film remains the only realistic Pokémon film, as well as the highest grossing, dwarfing the approximately $163.6 million made by a film that took second place on that list, 1999’s Pokémon: The First Movie.

With all the mainstream popularity that a subsidiary of the Pokémon franchise has gained, it’s no surprise that Nintendo would like to continue to benefit from its intellectual property. according to Internet Movie Database (IMDB), a movie sequel is in development but isn’t planned for a release until July 2024, so time will tell how close Nintendo is to wanting to diverge the different media in the sub-franchise.
