Zack Estrin Dead: Prison Break, writer and producer of Lost in Space was 51

Zack Estrin, respected writer, producer and producer known for his work on Fox’s Prison Break and the recent Netflix revival of “Lost in Space,” died September 23 in Hermosa Beach, California, aged 51.

Estrin’s death was confirmed Sunday by longtime talent agency, WME. Friends and family remembered Estrin as a versatile writer and producer who was a generous mentor to others.

“Zach Estrine was our everything,” the Estrine family said in a statement. “Best husband, father, son and friend. He liked to make everyone happy. He liked to make everyone laugh. He loved being a writer/producer and being a part of creating these shows that people enjoyed. But above all, he loved his family and friends. I thank you all for being a part of his life and ours.”

WME President Ari Greenberg added, “Zack has been our client for nearly 25 years. He has had a phenomenally successful career and has overseen many writers. We are very proud of all of his accomplishments and are so blessed to have called him a friend.”

Estrin was born in California and raised in Brooklyn. He attended the University of Southern California and found his way into film production, working on titles such as “Stranger Than Fiction” and “O.” He joined television as a producer amid the late 1990s boom in drama series such as WB Network’s “Charmed”, “Dawson’s Creek” and Fox’s short-lived “Tru Calling”.

From there, he progressed to writing and producing roles on Prison Break, a huge Fox budget actor. In recent years, he has made three fantasy dramas for ABC, The Whispers (2014-15), The River (2011-12) and “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (2013-14). Estrin was particularly proud of the work he led as show producer and executive producer on the reboot of “Lost in Space,” which ran for three seasons from 2018 to 2021.

Estrine’s survivors include his wife, Carrie Estrine, and daughters Charlotte and Chloe. He is also survived by his parents, Patricia and Jonathan Estrin, sister Amelia Burstein, half-brother Dylan Artants, and sisters Julie List and Laura Humphrey.

In lieu of flowers, the Estrin family is asking for donations to be made to the Zack Estrin USC Scholarship Fund, Sponsorship of PNG LLC, 11400 West Olympic Blvd. , Suite 590, Los Angeles, CA 90064
