Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando on the verge of closing due to Hurricane Ian

Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando are closed before Hurricane Ian approaches.

in The statement was posted online, Disney said it will close its Walt Disney World theme parks and water parks on Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29 as the storm approaches Florida. “We are monitoring weather conditions so that we can make timely decisions for the safety of our crew and guests, including when it is safe for representatives to return to the site to prepare for reopening,” the company said in a statement.

Universal said in their own statement That Universal Orlando Resort, including CityWalk, will also close on September 28 and September 29. Likewise, the horror Halloween nights events that were supposed to take place on those nights have been cancelled. The statement concluded, “We expect to reopen on September 30, as circumstances permit.”

It’s rare for any of the two massive parks to close but this is not unprecedented. Disney World recently closed its doors in 2019 due to the approach of Hurricane Dorian, while Disney and Universal suspended operations in early 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hurricane Ian was classified as a Category 3 storm when it hit Cuba early Tuesday morning, causing extensive damage and flooding. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm produced sustained winds of 115 miles per hour.

The storm comes just over a week after Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico, where hundreds of thousands of residents remain without power.
