Eurovision Host City: UK Whittles Shortlisted to Two Nominees

The host city of next year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in the United Kingdom, is close to announcing it.

The shortlist was revealed last month, with a mix of Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.

Cardiff was also in the race to host but pulled out, citing the fact that their biggest venue, the Principality Stadium, had to cancel a “large number” of events.

Today, it was revealed that Glasgow and Liverpool will be the two cities to bid to host the competition, which takes place annually in May.

The host city will have a much shorter window to prepare for the two-week extravaganza, which sees thousands of European Broadcasting Union (EBU) staff, volunteers, security and music performances descend from all over Europe, after making tough decisions this year about the venue. to host it.

According to the rules of the competition, the winning country in the last year usually hosts the subsequent competition. Earlier this year, the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra stormed to victory, which means that next year’s competition should have been held in Ukraine. However, given the country’s ongoing battle against the Russian invasion, the European Broadcasting Union said the competition would not be held there next year. After some discussion, the United Kingdom, which ranked second in May and was also a close ally of Ukraine, was chosen to host Ukraine.

BBC Studios will produce the semi-finals and the grand final, all broadcast on TV.
