Katie Couric revealed on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in June, writing: “Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the US. On June 21st, I became one of them. As we approach #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I wanted to share my personal story With all of you and I encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into the category of women who need more than a mammogram.”
The “Today” and “CBS Evening News” presenter gave more details about her diagnosis in an article Posted on her website. Couric, who had breast cancer surgery in July and started radiotherapy on September 7, also noted that her first husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer at the age of 42, while her sister died at the age of 54 of pancreatic cancer. Her cancer itself causes an “animated hanging feeling.”
“My mood quickly shifted from disbelief to resignation,” Couric added. “Given my family’s history of cancer, why would I avoid it? My reaction came from “Why me?” to “Why not me?”
Couric told her two daughters about her diagnosis four days after finding out about the news, writing, “I’ve taken both of them. I tried to be reassuring like Dr. Newman. Their faces froze in disbelief. Then shock. Then they started crying. She told Carrie and then Ellie, ‘Don’t worry,'” ‘I’ll be fine’, trying to convince myself like them. They had already lost one of their parents. The idea of losing someone else was incomprehensible.”
