Andrea Berloff and John Gatines sign a Netflix deal

Academy Award nominees Andrea Berloff and John Gatines have forged a creative partnership with Netflix to write feature films for the streaming service.

“From dramas based on true stories to thrillers and comedies, Andrea Berloff and John Gatines have created stories that connect deeply with audiences across genres,” said Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmore, Vice President of Netflix Studio Film, in a joint statement. . “We are thrilled to begin this creative partnership with these two highly acclaimed and versatile writing talents.”

Berloff is best known for co-writing the screenplay for “Straight Outta Compton,” the hit film about the rise and fall of NWA. She received an Academy Award nomination for her work. Her other works include “World Trade Center”, a September 11th drama directed by Oliver Stone, and “Blood Father”, a crime thriller film directed by Jean-Francois Richet. For Netflix, she co-wrote the soon-to-be-released The Mother, which will star Jennifer Lopez.

“The film development system hasn’t worked for a long time,” Berloff said in a statement. “The Gatins and I spent a lot of time talking about how it could be better – for both filmmakers and studios. We are so excited that Netflix recognized the value in our new approach and welcomed us on board. In addition to working with Ori, Kira and [original films chief] Scott Stopper feels like the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Gates was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for “Flight,” a drama film about an alcoholic pilot starring Denzel Washington and directed by Robert Zemeckis. His other works include “Hardball”, a sports drama with Keanu Reeves, “Coach Carter” starring Samuel L. Jackson, and “Real Steel” starring Hugh Jackman. Gatines made his directorial debut with his own screenplay, “Dreamer” starring Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell. He is currently co-writing “The ’84 War” with Berloff for Netflix.

“Andrea and I have had an amazing collaboration with Kira, Ori and Scott over the past few years – it’s a great opportunity to work exclusively with everyone on the feature side of Netflix,” Gatins said in a statement.
