Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran and Thames honored at the 2022 BMI London Awards

Ellie Goulding earned her 17th BMI honor, winning the Performance Rights Organization Chair’s Award at the 2022 BMI London Awards on October 3. The special event, which took place at the Savoy Hotel in London on 3 October, was also honored with the BMI Impact Award. Ed Sheeran in multiple categories.

Golding’s win saw her join the likes of former honorees Imagine Dragons, Noel Gallagher, Luis Fonsi, Pitbull, Willie Nelson, Gloria, Emilio Estefan and many more. The award was presented by BMI’s President/CEO and co-host of the evening, Mike O’Neill.

“I’ve never won anything like this before and it means a lot to me,” Golding said in her acceptance speech. “I got out of my house when I was 16 and kind of started at that time. And I felt like I had a lot to lose in making a living from something everyone told me was definitely impossible.”

The British pop star continued, “In the UK especially, as a woman, that ambition is kind of ingrained in you which is bad and not very cool, but it doesn’t have to be. Ambition is a core component of what we all do, besides Talent and a bit of luck, for anyone hoping for a long-term career, in a really tough industry, it’s a must, so for anyone on their way out there, please don’t listen to these people who have anything to say about your desire to achieve bigger and better, because you deserve that ”

In conclusion, she reflected on the state of the world regarding her status as an artist. “In a world that now needs urgent action, in a country that requires empathy, music may play its part in empowering others to get started.” Golding also performed her two singles “Woman” and “New Heights” from her 2020 album “Brightest Blue,” accompanied by the pianist and backing vocalists.

Tems — who gained international fame after successful collaborations with Drake and WizKid — was honored with the BMI Impact Award “in recognition of her pioneering artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music,” according to the event’s press release. In receiving this award, she joins previous winners Raye and Arlo Parks. Upon receiving the award, Tims said, “I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for this award… You have come a long way and I am so grateful.”

BMI also honored Sheeran and Johnny McKaid with this year’s European Song of the Year for their song “Bad Habits”. The award is given to last year’s song by British or European writers in the BMI catalog. Sheeran also took home three other awards from BMI London this year, honoring 4 million performances for “I Don’t Care”, 5 million performances by “Perfect”, and in the Pop Songs category with “Afterglow” which he co-wrote With David Hodges and “Shivers” co-written with McDaid and Kal Lavelle.

Elton John has won three awards from BMI London, recognizing 7 million shows for “Rocket Man” and 6 million shows for “Tiny Dancer” and in the Pop Songs category with “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” written jointly with Andrew Meecham and Dean Meredith .
