Busan Market: Finecut Adds “Brave Citizen” Webtoon Adaptation Feature

Korean sales company Finecut is using the Asian content market and film market on the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival to launch the action-comedy “Brave Citizen”.

The film, now in post-production, is an adaptation of the webtoon that ranked first in popularity when it was released on the Comico platform. It was later posted on another Korean platform, Naver Webtoon, and scored 2.27 million views on Taiwan’s Line Webtoon.

It tells the story of a former boxing champion who becomes a substitute high school teacher. After witnessing unbearable violence, she put on a mask and threw the first punch for justice.

The film is directed by Park Jin-pyo, the well-known director of several Korean commercial films including “Love Expectations”, “The Sound of Murder” and “You’re My Sunshine”.

It was produced by StudioN, (Yumi’s Cell Channel, and VOL Media (“Josee”) from Netflix’s “Sweet Home” TV. While the film was scheduled to be released in 2023, the film is being presented by Content Wavve, one of Korea’s most leading OTT platforms.

Other major elements include music by Dalpalan (Netflix’s “Kingdom 2”), editing by Kim Woo-hyun (“Emergency Declaration”), and Heo Myeong-hoeng’s martial arts choreography.

Finecut is also handling the rights to “Greenhouse,” which will screen this week in the Vision section of the Busan International Film Festival. Directed by Lee Sol Hwi, the film follows the pain and suffering of a woman who suffers from a psychological disorder.

Finecut comes to market fresh from Toronto and San Sebastian, where Hong Sangoo’s “Walk Up” debuted. Filmed in the fall of 2021, the story follows a middle-aged man, played by Kwon Hae-hyo, and his ambitious interior designer daughter, whom he hasn’t seen in years, as they stroll floor by block.

It also has the song “Next Sohee” by Jung July, which was launched in Cannes and is shown in the “Korean Cinema Today: Panorama” section of Busan.
