Jared Leto starred as fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in Biopic

Jared Leto is set to star in and produce a biopic of Karl Lagerfeld, the famous fashion designer whose career spanned more than 50 years. Lagerfeld, who passed away in February 2019, is best known for his strong role as artistic director of Chanel.

First reported by WWD, a sister publication of diverseThe project has already been approved by Karl Lagerfeld fashion house.

The Academy Award-winning actor will play the lead role, as well as produce the film with Emma Ludbrook through their Paradox production vehicle. The project is still in its early stages. The outlet has not yet been linked to the direct.

Leto told WWD that the film will likely explore the “multiple relationships” of the designer. “Carl has had a career spanning over 50 years, so both personally and professionally he has been close to a number of people. I can tell we are coming home to the major relationships that navigate different parts of his life,” Leto said.

Leto also brought in three of Lagerfeld’s old allies, Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of Karl Lagerfeld’s house since 2011; Caroline Lebar, Senior Vice President of Images and Communications at Karl Lagerfeld, and Sebastian Gondo, who was his personal assistant and bodyguard. The three will produce the film from my executive.

“Karl has always been an inspiration to me,” Leto said in a statement. The actor described Lagerfeld as “a true multiculturalist, an artist, an innovator, a leader, and most importantly, a good man.”

“When we got together with Karl Lagerfeld’s cast, we immediately shared a creative vision of doing a respectable poem for Karl while also pushing the artistic boundaries of what a biopic could be,” Leto continued.

Reggie, CEO of the Karl Lagerfeld brand, said that “over the years, they have been approached by several Hollywood producers who have suggested participating in a film about Karl’s famous life.”

“Since we met Jared and Emma we have felt genuinely confident about the story being told in the artistic way Carl would have loved to see it. During our conversations, we have created an equally reliable and inspiring creative relationship that will allow us to work together very seamlessly on this beautiful project,” continued Reggie.

The actor, who recently starred as Paolo Gucci in “House of Gucci,” has been cast by WME.
