Windows 11 started receiving its first major update — Windows 11 version 22H2, or the 2022 update — on September 20, and there are a lot of good additions to it. However, as with many Windows updates, there are also some issues that need to be done. Microsoft has already acknowledged that there are problems with some printers, and now, some users are having problems with remote desktop connections.
The issues were first reported on the Microsoft community forums, with a large number of users following up to make sure they encountered the problem as well. According to the original report, the Remote Desktop client in Windows 11 version 22H2 has an error where it only tries to establish the connection through UDP, completely ignoring TCP connections. As a result, many connections fail, as some organizations are set up to use only TCP.
Although Microsoft has not yet added the issue to the Windows 11 release health information page, the company responded to the forum post, eventually stating that it was looking into the issue. Fortunately, if you encounter this problem, there is a workaround. You will need to use the Registry Editor to navigate to ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTTerminal ServicesClientthen create a new DWORD value called fClientDisableUDP in this folder, and set the value to 1. This should allow Remote Desktop TCP connections to work again until Microsoft fixes the problem.
This isn’t the only problem recently discovered in version 22H2 of Windows 11 either. Microsoft added separate problem to the Windows 11 version information page, indicating that provisioning packs may not work correctly with Windows 11 version 22H2. If you power a computer with this update installed, provisioning packs may not be fully installed during setup, leaving some options incorrectly formatted. It’s also possible that the setup process restarts unexpectedly or simply doesn’t finish as a result.
An easy way around this is to provision the device before installing the update. If the initial setup has already been done, upgrading to version 22H2 of Windows 11 will not cause any problems. In addition, provisioning with Windows Autopatch is not affected by this issue. Microsoft says it is working on a fix for the update, but no timeline has been given yet.
