Qualcomm has been building laptop processors for a while, and they’re designed to always run on Windows on Arm ultraportables. But we didn’t know that some aftermarket developers would be ahead of Microsoft in terms of reaping the benefits of Windows on Arms-powered devices. In a series of tweets and replies, Monce showed off Windows 11 that booted to the desktop and to some extent works on the Microsoft Surface Duo 2. However, it was noticed that most of the hardware’s core components are not working. While the display works in a partial way, the operating system can only recognize one of the eight cores of the Snapdragon 888 SoC so far.
The basis for booting an alternative operating system on the second-generation Surface Duo was laid in August, when Gustave and other WOA Project contributors added initial support for the device in an open-source Windows UEFI firmware bootstrapper project called SurfaceDuoPkg. While Monce hasn’t shared any glimpse into the installation phase, the idea of a full version of Windows running on a Microsoft-made smartphone is quite intriguing to anyone interested in Android smartphones, Windows, or both.

If you’re feeling adventurous, this port can be installed on both European and American variants of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 after unlocking the bootloader. Keep in mind that the Windows 11 kernel will try to read an unsupported registry on this machine during boot up, so it would be better to wait for additional patches before trying to install them yourself to avoid unexpected errors. Needless to say, this comes with the risk of hacking your phone or worse.
It’s always fun to see operating systems running on devices they weren’t intended to work on. Some might find it almost poetic that Microsoft itself is struggling with an Android 12L release for the Surface Duo family — significant, at this point, coming more than seven months after the operating system debuted.
