Rick Grimes’ gun returns in The Walking Dead

Warning: This story contains spoilers for Sunday’s “A New Deal” episode of The Walking Dead. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is a gunslinger without a handgun. Fired last time to save his family and friends from a walking crowd in Season 9, Rick’s Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver was abandoned when it was carried away aboard a CRM helicopter. Six years after Rick’s disappearance, his partner Michonne (Danny Gurira) hands the gun to their daughter, Judith Grimes (Kylie Fleming). But like the peace-seeking cowboys of the Old West, the 11-year-old fighter picked up her father’s pistol upon returning to Civilization: the Commonwealth of Ohio.

I don’t want it, Judith tells her guardian Daryl (Norman Reedus) in New Deal, handing the gun she hasn’t fired since shooting a Whisperer Beta (Ryan Hurst) in Season 10. Stalker episode.

Judith explains, “My mom talked about the day she’ll ever hang her sword for good. Not that we’ll be completely safe, but just enough to feel like she doesn’t need it anymore.” If you keep Rick’s gun, “things will go back to the way they were. But they should be better.”

After stalking Deputy Governor Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) under the Commonwealth flag, Daryl wants to leave the Ohio community and bring Judith and his little brother RJ (Anthony Azure) back to Alexandria. But Judith wants to stay and help the underprivileged citizens of the Commonwealth, just like Daryl “and my mom and dad did in Alexandria and the Hilltop.”

“This was different,” her uncle Daryl says. She replied, “It wasn’t like that. The only difference now is that you’d rather run than stay and fight.”

Later, Daryl told Judith, “I hope things are as you want them to be. That’s the way they should be. But it’s not.” With Rick and Michonne going looking for him, Daryl says, “I have to keep you safe.”

Daryl agrees to hold on to Rick’s gun “for a while,” he told Judith, “until you want it.” That moment comes sooner than expected: When pedestrians walk into the walls during the Commonwealth Founders’ Day celebration, Judith tells him to give her the gun. “They need our help.”

Judith uses Rick’s pistol to shoot pedestrians attacking a crowd of Commonwealth citizens. The episode ends with Judith firing a bullet that kills the pedestrians as he eats Sebastian Melton (Theo Rabe Olson), whose death threatens their future in the Commonwealth.

“The story we wanted to play Judith and hang the gun with has Western origins,” explained Angela Kang, show host on AMC+. The Walking Dead: The Insider. “When I refused it at first, it’s because that’s how she’d rather live her life. Like, she’d like if all of them could hang their guns forever.”

Kang added, “I think Judith, in that kind of youthful idealism, really feels, ‘Why would you leave this and not try to survive and fix it?'” “There’s some truth to what you’re saying, and I think that gives Daryl something to think about. There’s a really nice exchange between the parent-child character, as they’re both learning from each other right now.”
