Jonathan Majors gained 10 pounds of muscle to play Kang in the MCU

Marvel has yet to show an initial image of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conquerer in the upcoming movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” but expect some serious muscle whenever it does. as part of a Men’s Health cover storyMajors and his team revealed that he gained 10 pounds of pure muscle for playing the role of Marvel villain. The actor is set to become the new Thanos of the MCU, as Kang’s arc spans from “Quantumania” to “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in May 2025.

“It was Kangxi’s personality and proportions [that drew me to the role]Majors said. “And the possibilities that it has. I thought, ‘I’ll take a chance on it.'”

Stephen Broussard, executive producer on “Loki” and producer of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” said Majors had a “crazy work ethic” on Kang. The actor worked with strength and conditioning coach Jimmy Sawyer to gain muscle for the first time in the MCU.

“He’s a warrior’s version of Kang, so there was a focus on what this warrior would look like who’s been around through the ages and has developed all sorts of martial skills,” Sawyer said. “It was about making him look like an imposing figure.”

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, added, “Jonathan is an incredibly compelling actor, but he makes the work look easy, and he’s also great—everyone pays attention when they step into the room.”

The first trailer for “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” debuted at Comic-Con over the summer, but Marvel has yet to release it online. The footage shows Kang telling Paul Rudd’s champion Paul Rudd, “You’re an interesting guy, Scott Lang. You’ve lost a lot of time. But time, it’s not what you think.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened on February 17, 2023.
