Angela Lansbury saved her daughter from Charles Manson

In the wake of Angelia Lansbury’s death on Tuesday, the actress gave a 2014 interview MailOnline (Across independent) resurfaced due to the revelation that Lansbury once saved her daughter from joining the cult of Charles Manson. Lansbury said her daughter, now 69, was “fascinated” by Manson, the notorious serial killer whose chain of victims included Sharon Tate. The Lansbury kid got involved in drugs as a young teenager and fell under the influence of Manson’s spell.

It started with cannabis but moved on to heroin. “There were factions in the hills above Malibu devoted to deadly pursuits,” Lansbury said. “It pains me to say it, but at one point, Deidre was with a crowd led by Charles Manson. She was one of the many young people who knew him—and were fascinated. He was an extraordinary and charismatic figure in many ways, there’s no doubt about that.”

After Lansbury finds out that her daughter has fallen into the Manson Circle, she tells her husband that they must leave the Los Angeles area for good. Staying was not an option.

“We picked up the sticks and took the family to a house I found in County Cork,” Lansbury said. “I was drawn to Ireland because it was my mother’s hometown and it was also a place where my children would not be exposed to more ill influences. I still have a house there that I try to visit at least once a year. So I turned down all work for a year and simply kept the house.”

It took Deidre a little longer “to kick her bad habits,” Lansbury said, “but she’s finally married and she and her husband now live in Los Angeles, where they run their own Italian restaurant.”

Lansbury, whose 75-year acting career included “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Manchurian Candidate,” passed away at her Los Angeles home on October 11. She was 96 years old – five days shy of her 97th birthday.
