The “Vatican Girl” from the Netflix Doc series will examine the case of Emanuela Orlandi.

Netflix has announced a high-profile Italian documentary series, “Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi,” written and directed by British Emmy Award winner Mark Lewis for the documentary series “Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer.”

The broadcasting giant also dropped a trailer for a documentary series produced by British television production company RAW, which will premiere globally on Netflix on October 20.

The series is the latest investigation into a case that began on June 22, 1983, when Emanuela Orlandi, a 15-year-old girl living in Vatican City, went missing in mysterious circumstances believed to be related to the Vatican. The case made headlines around the world.

Orlandi disappeared on the way home from a music lesson. Since then, her family and investigators have struggled to solve the mystery. Various theories linked the supposed kidnapping of the girl to intrigues involving secret services from various countries, the Italian mob, and the Vatican, which denied the accusations of a cover-up.

The four-part “Vatican Girl” investigates the case with new interviews with the Orlandi family and witnesses the Netflix statement says have never been heard. “These new sounds paint a picture of a dark web of secrets hidden at all costs,” the statement says.

The series is presented by Emanuela’s brother, Pietro Orlandi, and Italian investigative reporter Andrea Purgatori who has covered the case from the start.

docu series written and directed by Lewis. Chiara Messino is the producer and Tom Barry and Dimitri Dugan are the executive producers of RAW. Luis and Messino will reveal more details about the “Vatican Girl” during a panel discussion at the Museum of Islamic Art content market in Rome on Thursday (October 13).
