Camerimage Festival Honors “Empire of Light” Director Sam Mendes

EnergaCamerimage, the international film festival focused on cinematography, will honor Academy Award winner Sam Mendes with a special Krzysztof Kieslowski Award for the director during its 30th edition, taking place in Toru Poland from 12-19 November.

Academy Award winner and BAFTA winner Michael Ward (“Blue Story,” Top Boy”) starring Olivia Colman (“The Favourite” and “The Lost Daughter”) will open the Camerimage Festival in addition to being one of the nominees. The main contestants.

His latest film, Empire of Light, is a critically acclaimed drama about the power of human connection in turbulent times. Set in and around a faded old cinema in an English seaside town in the early ’80s, the film follows Hilary (Coleman), a cinema director with a mental health problem, and Stephen (Ward), a new hire longing to escape the provincial town. . The two find a sense of belonging through their unexpected and tender relationship.

Empire of Light also brings together Mendes and Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Dickens, who shot two of the directors’ films: “1917” and “Skyfall.”

In addition to the Academy Award, Mendes was nominated for three additional Academy Awards and won several BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Tonys, and Olivier Awards.

Mendes will be on hand at Camerimage to accept the award and participate in a Q&A after his film screening.
