Oscar ‘She’s Happy’: Zoe Kazan in the lead, Carey Mulligan in the support

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are breaking up, at least regarding their Oscar campaign. She Is Happy, which premiered at the New York Film Festival, and then a day later at the Middleburg Film Festival in Virginia, Universal Pictures will campaign in the Best Actress category in Kazan, while Mulligan will seek widespread attention. – Unlock the supporting actress race.

Directed by Maria Schrader, “She Said” tells the story of New York Times reporters Megan Toohy (Mulligan) and Judy Kantor (Kazan), who helped launch the #MeToo movement by exposing the silence surrounding sexual assault in Hollywood, especially Harvey Weinstein.

With 30 reviews counted so far, the film currently sits at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics picking the cast’s performances, specifically Mulligan and Samantha Morton, who plays Zelda Perkins, Weinstein’s former personal assistant in the 1990s. Reportedly as only one scene, Morton performs another wonder in one scene from the two-time Academy Award-nominated actress “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and “In America” (2003). Her other performance this year comes as the ex-wife of the 600-pound Charlie Brendan Fraser in Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Whale’.

Competing alongside fellow co-star Mulligan, who has been nominated twice for “Education” (2009) and “Promising Young Woman” (2020), may present a hurdle for both performers. About 33% of the time, the Best Supporting Actress category has produced nominees from the same film. However, this year there are a slew of films that aim to capitalize on this popular event, including “Everything Everywhere at Once” (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and “The King’s Woman” (Lashana Lynch and Thoso). Mpidou) and “Modern Women” (Jesse Buckley, Claire Foy, Judith Ivey, and Rooney Mara, awaiting official class placement).

It’s also worth noting that next year, Mulligan will have a much-anticipated role in Bradley Cooper’s sophomore directorial effort “Maestro,” and the industry may be waiting until that’s made for the star.

For Kazan, she’s reached the feet of the lead actress’s slate of slates as Cate Blanchett (“Tar”), Danielle Didweiler (“Up”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere at Once”). With an impressive resume of roles that included notable roles in “Ruby Sparks” (2012), which she wrote, and later co-wrote, her real-life debut for director Paul Dano “Wildlife”, the granddaughter of director Elia Kazan (“On the Waterfront”) and “A Street Car Named Desire”) hasn’t really dipped her toe into a conversation about awards just yet. We will wait to see if she can achieve success this season.
