SAG-AFTRA Urges Congress to Pass the CROWN Act

Kerry Washington, Zoe Kravitz, Rosario Dawson, Don Cheadle and Nessie Nash Bates were among the 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members who urged Congress to pass the CROWN Act, which prohibits discrimination based on hair style and texture.

In a strongly worded letter sent to the US Senate, SAG-AFTRA encouraged Congress to pass the bill, as it is an essential step to make all workplaces safe for people of color, and is in line with union efforts to promote equality and inclusion. in the media and entertainment industry.

The CROWN Law symbolizes the creation of a respectable and open world for natural hair.

“The CROWN Act is a major step in ending hair-based discrimination in public education and the workplace,” said Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA. People should feel free to style their hair as they feel most comfortable without the risk of prejudice and unequal treatment. The CROWN Act will protect and positively impact the lives of many Americans in school and work, but there is still more work to be done to ensure that private institutions adopt the protections provided by CROWN. We should celebrate all hairstyles that don’t stand out! ”

In the letter, members asserted that “discrimination on the basis of hair style or texture is a destructive practice that has alienated Black Americans and has caused irreparable harm.”

The Actor’s Guild is working towards equalizing hair and makeup in the workplace.

The statement of support was recommended by the SAG-AFTRA Hair and Makeup Equity Work Group, chaired by Jason George, Yvette Nicole Brown, Tiffany Yvonne Cox, Michelle Heard, Ezra Knight, Linda Powell and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

“When you work in an industry where you can be hired — or not hired — very much in terms of your appearance, you become very aware of how harmful it can be to discriminate against someone based on something as weird as the way they wear their hair,” George said. “We have come a long way in our industry, but we have our union backing us and not everyone has that. Until the leaders of our nation say, in no uncertain terms, that it is unacceptable to discriminate against someone on the basis of their hair, employers and private organizations will continue to avoid the issue. Easily. The CROWN Act sets a new standard of fairness that makes it difficult to justify outdated and harmful practices.”

Senator Cory Booker first introduced the CROWN Act in the House, which passed the bill in March by 235 votes to 189. The CROWN law is awaiting approval in the Senate, and then it will go to President Joe Biden’s office.

SAG-AFTRA supports Crown Code

The American Federation of Television and Radio Actors Guild, the world’s largest and most powerful entertainment union, has called on the US Senate to pass S.188, the CROWN Act, to end racial discrimination in poetry at the federal level.

Discrimination on the basis of hair style or texture is a devastating practice that alienated black Americans and caused irreparable harm.

Implicit prejudices toward black workers and students based on their hair texture, style, and color remain the norm in federal offices and public education. Black students are disciplined at a rate four times higher than any other racial or ethnic group, and research has found that 70% of all comment disciplines are discretionary, many of which stem from dress code violations that include hairstyles. Additionally, a biased lens that makes hair frizzy or unprofessional—despite the fact that it has nothing to do with job performance—often prevents blacks from promotions and job opportunities.

It is time for federal agencies and institutions to take additional steps to ensure the fair and equal treatment of all citizens they employ or who depend on their services, and this essential legislation puts all employers aware that the landscape in which Americans can be discriminated against on the basis of their natural physical appearance has not been fair and is possible.

We, the undersigned members of SAG-AFTRA, and SAG-AFTRA, wholeheartedly support the CROWN Act to put an end to racial discrimination in the workplace once and for all. We urge you to take action and pass this legislation.

Thank you.
