New York The emergency provision for SNAP benefits is scheduled to be extended through November 2022 and beyond.
The change is being made to try to help SNAP beneficiaries deal with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and cost of living crisis.
The change was announced by the Governor of New York Kathy Hochhol She explained that the New York State Office of Temporary Assistance and Disability Assistance (OTDA) will continue to issue emergency benefits at least through February 2023.
Additional SNAP Benefits
All New York households registered with SNAP will receive the maximum permitted food benefit from October 2022 through February 2023.
Households already nearing or at the maximum benefit level, which is $939 for a family of four, will receive a supplemental payment of at least $95.
“These emergency supplement benefits have been vital to our efforts to combat food insecurity by helping New Yorkers who are struggling to feed themselves and their families,” Hoshol He said in a statement.
What is SNAP?
SNAP used to be known as Food Stamps and is a federal program that provides assistance with purchasing food for low-income families.
It is administered at the state level although it is a program that stems from the central government in Washington, D.C.
New York isn’t the only state that has extended SNAP benefits for longer to those who need them.
The same can be said for the District of Columbia, Kansas, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The money can be used to buy food items such as fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, bread, grains, seeds and plants that can produce food for the family.
