The power of sound and the effects of war dominated 26 Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival Awards, where the French document “07:15 – Blackbird” won the main prize and the Cinematography Prize.
The story of a young girl’s quest to learn about the call of a mysterious bird, directed by Judith Avray and photographed by Mario Valero, the 30-minute fairy tale poetics, ‘Balancing Natural Wonders and Technology’, was won by the Opus Bonum jury.
The Croatian document The Fugitives, a study of letters from young Balkan war resisters by Damir Markovina, was awarded the Central and Eastern European Award along with a sound design honor, while Over Our Hills, a satirical look at Swiss military recruits By Matteo Ybarra, she won the Opus Bonum Editing Award thanks to a superb montage of archival material.
Fanny Pelletier’s look at Quebec teenage girls struggling with identity crises and social media, “Bloom,” won the debut award, while the Spanish document “The Greatest Bible” by Javier Coudsal won accolades for its original approach by dating a large home to LGTBIQ+ residents.
The Chick Joy award, which topped the national competition, went to Lucy Kralova’s documentary opera “Code Capper” for its unorthodox approach to honoring the life work of composer Jan Capper.
The strong Czech competition section also awarded The Visitors, Veronica Lechkova’s document on social anthropologist efforts to study a community facing climate crises in a Norwegian archipelago, with a special mention while the Czech Liberation Award went to Jan Buchta’s look at Jim 1978’s mass suicide of the Jones cult in Guyana, “aBCDeFGhi-JONESTOWN.”
The film’s intricate reconstruction of the tragedy, based on audio recordings and edited by Simon Opdla, impressed jurors with its approach to the tragedy, as hundreds of Jones’ followers were forced to drink poisons.
The Czech Cinematography Honoring Peter Michal went to Czech literary translator Anna Karenina, “Found by What You’re Looking for”, photographed by Jakob Verbeek.
The awards ceremony, held at the DKO Cultural Center in central Czech Republic, concluded a week of talks and discussions focused on everything from filmmaking ethics to independent distribution, document mentorship programs and honors to inspiring document makers from the Philippines, Azerbaijan and beyond.
