We were expecting Apple to release a new batch of Macs before the end of this year according to current rumours. But comments now made by Mark Gorman of Bloomberg and Apple executives have challenged this view.
In his last Power On Newsletter (Opens in a new tab)The next batch of Mac updates won’t come until the first quarter of next year, Gurman says, led by the MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro in 14-inch and 16-inch variants. This supersedes his previous claim that we’ll see these new laptops in November.
It appears that these new laptops, which will replace the current 14-inch MacBook Pro 2021 and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021, may appear at Apple’s spring product launch event, which is usually held in March of each year. It will also fit with the release of major updates to macOS Ventura (13.3) and iOS 16 (16.3), which are due to roll out for the first time in February or March as well according to Gurman.
The updated Mac mini is still on the way, and appears to be being tested with the same Apple M2 chip seen in the MacBook Air M2, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro 2022 and iPad Pro 2022, as well as a version with a more powerful Apple M2 Pro, the same What we expect in the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.
Gorman adds that we’ll finally see a Mac Pro desktop tower powered by Apple Silicon appear next year. This is the last Mac still available only with an Intel CPU, and it will undoubtedly replace the Mac Studio as the most powerful new computer in Apple’s lineup.
Contrary to Gurman’s claims, Apple CEO Tim Cook himself appears to have hinted at no more big announcements coming from Apple in 2022. During Apple’s latest quarterly earnings report (via Camel (Opens in a new tab)), Cook mentioned ushering in the holiday season “with our assortment set,” which you can interpret to mean that no new devices will be released between now and Black Friday.
Also, Apple CFO Luca Maestri predicted that the first quarter of 2023 would be a slower period of growth for Apple than the previous year, in part because the same period in 2022 “benefited from the launch and channel feel associated with our new redesign. MacBook Pro with M1 He didn’t explicitly say there won’t be a MacBook equivalent launch this year, but it’s reasonable to conclude.
