AFM: Buoyant Hong Kong Studio Edko Sales Trio

Riding his Hong Kong box office success in “Table for Six,” Edko Films, the production, distribution and exhibition group headed by Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”), is launching three new titles in the American film market this week.

One of the titles is the courtroom drama “Guilty Conscience,” which follows the aftermath of a manslaughter case in which a lawyer’s mistake landed his client in prison. However, the road to appeal appears to be justice itself on the road to trial.

Writer and director Jack Ng is making his directorial debut in the drama. His track record as a writer includes Idku’s 2021 hits “Anita” and “Cold War II.” The company’s confidence that the image is set as Edko’s biggest title in the crucial Chinese New Year slot. It stars Dayo Wong (“Table for Six”, “Grandmaster”) and Louise Wong (“Anita”).

Eric Tsang Heng-wen made his directorial debut with “The Hong Kong Family,” the drama that premiered at the Busan Festival last month. It depicts the return to the city of a man who he believed would be the peacemaker in his family. But the seasonal dinner doesn’t go as planned. It stars actors from three of Hong Kong’s latest hits – Teresa Mo (“Mama’s Affair”), Tse Kwan Ho (“Warriors of Future”) and Edan Lui (“Chili Laugh Story”) – and hits local theaters in no time. later this month.

The company’s sales division, newly headed by CEO Jason Eung, also represents the acquired title “Cyber Heist.” Starring two of Hong Kong’s most famous actors, Simon Yam and Aaron Kwok, the film is directed by Wong Heng Fan (“I Live It”) and produced by Sui Ching (“Paradox”, “Limbo”).

Ieong and his team will also sell the remaining territories available in “Table for Six,” which broke a string of records after its September 7 release. The family comedy is now the second highest grossing domestic film of all time in Hong Kong, with a cumulative gross of HK$72 million ($9.23 million) from more than 1 million ticket sales, or more than 14% of the territory’s total population.

The film held first place at the box office for 42 days and is still being released in Hong Kong and mainland China, grossing 104 million yuan ($14.3 million). The film was originally scheduled to be shown during the Chinese New Year, but with movie theaters closed due to the pandemic causing all releases to be postponed, director Sunny Chan has released new items to alter seasonality.

Since movie theaters reopened in late summer, a string of Hong Kong films have enjoyed renewed success with home audiences, giving the city’s film industry a respite from more than two years of mostly bad news.

Earlier this year, Edko announced plans to begin developing and producing a feature-length series drawn from its library of intellectual property, which includes film titles including the action thriller “Cold War” and the martial arts film “Fearless.”

Ieong is an experienced veteran of Hong Kong companies including TVB, UA Films, Emperor Motion Pictures and Bravos Pictures, in addition to his work at Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment.
