Microsoft updates Xbox Cloud Gaming with better browser performance on Linux and ChromeOS devices

Microsoft has updated its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to offer better browser support on Linux, which means better performance on Steam Deck.

Although Steam Deck was intended to run games from the Steam platform, it has been quite versatile so far, thanks to the community’s efforts. There are some situations where you can’t go very far though, and that was the case with Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming. Now, it looks like the experience has been updated and improved, thanks to the Microsoft team.

Jordan Cohen, lead product manager for xCloud Services, shared on Reddit to share that the team at Microsoft have made performance improvements to Xbox Cloud Gaming for those who play on Linux through a browser or on ChromeOS devices. Cohen stated that the changes will bring higher resolutions and a smoother streaming experience. On top of that, it looks like Microsoft has refreshed the browser-based gaming experience by moving to a new streaming technology that should make things even better.

Cohen did not elaborate on the type of technology used but did mention that improvements will be available for Steam Deck. For the most part, this seems like a win for any Xbox Cloud Gaming users who were accessing the service through a browser. For the most part, things were pretty good, but now, they should get better. As a side note, Cohen has submitted a few questions via his Reddit thread and has already indicated that nothing will change for Android users, and things will remain the same, with streaming limited to 720p and 60fps.

Valve has done a great job with Steam Deck, getting it in as many hands as possible over the past year. Recently, it has become possible to buy one without pre-ordering, which means that you can get it as soon as two weeks after placing the order. In addition to expedited sales, hardware support has been boosted, as the company has opened a number of service centers to handle repairs. If you’re interested, you can buy one directly from Valve, with the portable console starting at $399.
