The new HDMI Quad Connectable Adapter can connect up to four 1080p displays, even on laptops that officially support only one external display.
Plugable adds another product to its line of adapters and hubs – the HDMI Quad Pluggable Adapter. The name is pretty straightforward, but the Plugable Quad HDMI Adapter is a small display adapter with four HDMI ports, which connects to your laptop using USB Type-C or Type-A, so you don’t need a traditional built-in display output. All four connected monitors can have a resolution of up to 1080p and a refresh rate of 60Hz.
The big selling point here isn’t just support for up to four monitors at once, although that’s actually quite impressive. However, its main highlight is that it can support these four screens even on Macs powered by Apple M1 or M2 chipsets. These processors usually only support one external monitor, but with this adapter, you can have four unique external monitors connected to your laptop at the same time regardless of these limitations.
That’s because the HDMI Plugable Adapter does not use a typical display signal such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Instead, it features a Silicon Motion chipset, which allows external displays to be supported using a traditional USB connection. It’s similar to DisplayLink, which Plugable also uses in a few of its products, like the Triple 4K Display Docking Station we reviewed a few months ago. However, it is a different technology and requires different specialized drivers, so you will have to download them even if you have used a DisplayLink adapter before.
