Iranians involved in IDFA competition film ‘Silent House’ are banned from leaving Iran

Iranian directors of “Silent House” have been banned from leaving their country, according to a spokesperson for the film, and will therefore not be able to travel to the Netherlands, where the film will have its world premiere at IDFA, one of the world’s leading documentary film festivals.

Farnaz Goorabchian and Mohammad Reza Goorabchian were scheduled to speak about the film, which is in the main competition category, after its screening on Saturday in Amsterdam, where the 35th edition of the festival kicks off from November 9-20. The film was also nominated for an IDFA Award for Best Debut Film.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of Iranian history over the past forty years, “Silent House” traces the fortunes of three generations of an upper-middle-class Iranian family. At the center of the story is the century-old house in Tehran, where the family lived happy and tragic times.

The filmmakers, brother and sister in the family, were able to draw on the rich archive of family home movies, putting them together with historical material as well as interviews with relatives. They charted the changes that members of this traditional family went through after the 1979 revolution to the present in a very personal narrative, weaving together a rich tapestry of social and political themes.

When choosing the film, Orwa Nyarabyeh, Artistic Director of the International Foundation of Fine Arts said: “The story of who lived at home is a mirror of Iran’s history since before the 1979 revolution until today. A deeply political journey that takes us to a part or side of Iran today I think is very informative, because we We rarely see it, and our image of Iran usually comes from more stereotypical sources.”

He said it was “a very mature film,” and “not to be missed.” He concluded: “We believe [the film] It will be seen everywhere around the world because it is so well made.”

The film is a co-production between Iran, France, Canada, the Philippines and Qatar. Farnaz Joorabchian and Mohammad Reza Garabchian produce for F&M Productions, along with Elaheh Nobakht for Eli Image, which manages international sales. Co-producers are Joel Maranan for Cinema Unfinished, Stephanie LeBron for Babel Doc, NFP and Fatima Riahi for Al Jazeera Documentary Channel.
