Magnolia Pictures buys Olivia Colman’s road trip comedy ‘Joyride’

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the US rights to “Joyride,” a road trip comedy starring Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and Charlie Reed. The independent studio will release the film in theaters and on demand on December 23.

The picture is directed by Emyr Reynolds (Songs While I’m Away) and written by Elbe Keoghan (“Bad Sisters). The cast also includes Lochlann O Mearáin, Olwen Fouéré, Ruth McCabe and Tommy Tiernan.

“Joyride” follows 12-year-old Mully (Reid), who, after fleeing his father, steals a cab and is shocked to find a woman, Joy (Colman), in the back seat with a child. Joy decides to give up her child to a friend, and Molly needs some distance from his indebted father, who is after the cash Molly has with him. So a mother and a middle-aged teenager embark on a journey through Ireland – a journey that leads to their bonding.

Coleman, best known for her performances in “The Crown,” “The Father,” “The Lost Daughter” and her Academy Award-winning role in “The Favourite,” keeps a busy dance card. She gained a lot of enthusiasm for her starring role in Empire of Light, set to star in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, and Wonka and provide voice work in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Upcoming releases of Magnolia include the thriller “Hunt” directed and starring “Squid Game” actor Lee Jung-jae, as well as the crime thriller “Master Gardener” by Paul Schrader.

Ingenious Media presents the film alongside Embankment Films, Screen Ireland and Subotica Film. It was produced by Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan. The executive producers are Tim Haslam, Hugo Grumbar, Peter Touche, Christelle Conan, Dearbhla Regan, and Ailbhe Keogan.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia EVP Dori Begley and SVP of the acquisitions John Von Thaden, with Mark Lane of Embankment Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
