Gotham Awards 2022: Sidney Poitier Receives Icon Tribute

The Gotham Film and Media Institute announced that the late Oscar-winning director, activist and actor Sidney Poitier will receive a posthumous Icon Tribute during the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards on Monday, November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The announcement of this year’s Icon Tribute follows the release of the critically acclaimed documentary “Sidney,” which had its world premiere during a presentation party at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released to Apple TV+ in September. The documentary has since won Best Biographical Documentary Feature at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

The Gotham Awards Advisory Committee began Honoring Gotham in 2021, seeking to draw attention to the daring, artistry, and impact of a filmmaker from a historically excluded community whose work has not previously been recognized by the organization. Playwright and director Kathleen Collins was honored last year.

“Devotion” actor Jonathan Majors, “Sydney” director Reginald Hudlin and producer Derek Murray will introduce the Poitiers to the family.

“Punk Rock Vegan Movie” opens the 29th Slam Dance Festival

The 29th Slamdance Film Festival has announced the festival’s opening night film, “Punk Rock Vegan Movie” directed by Moby, and a new partnership with the University of Utah for the first in-person screening of Unstoppable.

The film traces the relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights, and features interviews with Ian MacKay, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Capu, Steve Ignorant, and Captain Sensible.

“Punk Rock Vegan Movie” was created to highlight the amazing and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and urgency of adopting the uncompromising morals and actions of the original rock activist. Moby said in a statement about his directorial debut.

The Rock continued, announcing his plan to release the film for free, “After it has its world premiere at Slamdance, It’s Yours.” “It is my intention to abandon the film, because I cannot in good conscience attempt to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism.”

The 2023 Unstoppable slate includes feature films and short films in various genres from creators with visible and unseen disabilities, as well as directors’ panels and Q&As. The program is free and open to the public, January 23-25.

The 2023 Slamdance Film Festival will take place in person from January 20-26 and online on the Slamdance Channel from January 23-29.

Patton Oswalt hosts the MPSE Golden Reel Awards

The Motion Picture Sound Editors have announced that actor, comedian and author Patton Oswalt will host the 70th MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Honoring outstanding achievement in sound editing, the Golden Reel Awards will be held Sunday, February 26th at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles.

“Like other crafts, audio editing doesn’t get the praise and appreciation it deserves,” said Oswalt. “Sound editors use their creativity to bring entire worlds to life. Sound, like nothing else, is what immerses the viewer in the story. Sound editors are very important to any finished project and it is a pleasure to celebrate them at the 70th Golden Reel Awards.”

The upcoming Golden Reel Awards will be the first live ceremony in three years. The party will include surprise guests and features as the entertainment industry’s leading audio organization celebrates its 70th year recognizing the outstanding creative achievements of those who practice the craft.
