Leonardo DiCaprio, Brendan Fraser Reunited on Scorsese Set: Meaningful

Brendan Fraser’s career comeback isn’t limited to Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” for which Fraser is widely expected to receive a Best Actor Oscar nomination. While the actor is set to attend the 2023 Academy Awards as a nominee, he will also be spending the next year as a cast member on his debut Martin Scorsese film. Fraser plays a defense attorney in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Scorsese’s 1920s western crime drama about the FBI’s investigation of a series of murders among the people of the Osage.

Fraser has a supporting role in Killers of the Flower Moon, which leads the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons and Lily Gladstone. During a recent interview with GQFraser recalled a meaningful encounter with DiCaprio that happened on the set of “Flower Moon.” The two hadn’t seen each other in nearly 30 years, when they met briefly on the set of Paramount Pictures after Fraser caught a showing of DiCaprio’s breakout film “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” which earned DiCaprio his first Academy Award nomination.

“[Back then], when I thought maybe all of them, I don’t know, 17, 16, maybe did Gilbert Grape. I saw him on the Paramount lot. I think I was just on ‘school ties’ or something, and I was, like, confused but I just wanted to tell him, ‘Listen, listen. That was unbelievable.'”

It was the shortest of encounters, but Fraser’s words of encouragement for the young DiCaprio clearly stayed with the latter all these years. When the two met face-to-face on the set of Scorsese’s “Flower Moon,” he brought up their first meeting with Fraser.

“Repeat it to me,” Fraser said. “I was the only guy who didn’t treat me like a little kid,” he said. He volunteered it for me. That was meaningful.”

Apple is behind the release of “Killers of the Flower Moon” but has not yet announced its release date. Fraser next comes to the big screen in A24’s The Whale, which opens December 9 in theaters.
