Life after Potter was a wake-up call. First of all, I faced the fact that I wasn’t very good at acting. Testing as a 12-year-old is one thing—more or less to make sure you don’t look down the lens or forget lines—but as an adult, it’s quite another. In Los Angeles, it was all about the ring: three auditions a day, different scripts, different accents and accents—skills I hadn’t put into practice, even though I was pretty seasoned in other ways. There were a lot of no’s, and even before I could say a word I’d seen a lot they were thinking, “Don’t have it, it’s a potter’s kid.” Harry Potter got me into the room but too often it was a huge disadvantage and I had to prove myself. I am so grateful now.
