The Lavender Hill Mob review: Phil Porter’s version can’t measure the heights of a comic | theater | entertainment

While Phil Porter’s non-offensive theatrical version couldn’t hope to scale the film’s comic heights, it does have its fun moments.

Set in Rio during New Year’s Eve, the celebrations of a Dutch criminal fugitive (Miles Jopp) are interrupted by the arrival of Farrow (Guy Burgess), who has come from England to find him.

Mistaken for a film director, Farrow is persuaded to stay while the British expatriate act in Holland’s criminal adventure story, which involved melting down gold and smuggling it out of the UK as souvenirs from the Eiffel Tower.

The cast — especially posh girls Lady Agnes (Tessa Churchard) and Audrey (Victoria Blunt) who relish their roles in Cockney Geezers — are very watchable, even when the amateur theatrics of the play-within-a-play threaten to upend the story.
