The computing power of the upcoming MacBook Pro with M2 Pro may have just been revealed, thanks to a newly published Geekbench 5 benchmark score shared by ShrimpApplePro on Twitter (Opens in a new tab).
The entry “Mac14,6”, possibly referring to the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, has the M2 Max chip inside it, rather than the M2 Pro chip we think will come as standard. This Max chip packs a 12-core CPU (up from 8 cores in the base Apple M2 chip) and an impressive 96GB of RAM, scoring scores of 1,853 in the single-core test and 13,855 in the multi-core test.
The single-core score bests both the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, Apple’s most powerful current laptop, and the Mac Studio with M1 Ultra, Apple’s most powerful M-series device overall. The new MacBook’s claimed multi-core score beats the current MacBook Pro as well, even if it doesn’t match the Ultra chip in the studio.
Row 0 – cell 0 | Single-core Geekbench 5 scores | Geekbench 5 multi-core score |
MacBook Pro with M2 Max / 96 GB RAM (alleged) | 1,853 | 13855 |
16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max / 64GB RAM | 1,781 | 12683 |
Mac Studio with M1 Ultra / 128GB RAM | 1794 | 24215 |
More power is naturally a good thing for users who want a MacBook Pro for business purposes like photo and video editing or music production. But having the 96GB RAM option is also likely to be beneficial for serious power users, as it will improve the laptop’s multitasking capabilities. The maximum RAM in a MacBook is currently 64GB with the M1 Max chip, though Apple desktop computers can still go higher. You can allocate up to 128GB of RAM in the M1 Ultra Mac Studio, while the Mac Pro can fit up to 1.5TB of RAM.
As much as we can expect to love the next generation of MacBook Pro laptops with upgraded M2 chips, we’ll likely end up recommending the less powerful MacBook Air M2 or the 13-inch MacBook Pro M2 to mainstream users. These are slightly cheaper than the current 14-inch MacBook Pro, while still providing plenty of power for everyday tasks.
We thought the next generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro might hit last month’s event, similar to when the M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pros arrived in 2021. While we got a new 10.9-inch iPad and iPad Pro, There were no Macs to be seen, which now makes us suspect that the new laptops will instead arrive at Apple’s usual spring product launch next year. Hopefully, most power-hungry laptop buyers can hold out until then.
