Rollercoaster ‘Uncharted’ takes off at Spanish theme park PortAventura World

Spain’s largest amusement park, PortAventura World, has entered into a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures to build its first dark roller coaster inspired by the box office hit “Uncharted,” and based on the PlayStation video game franchise of the same name.

The ride, which opens in mid-2023, will take place in the Far West area of the Barcelona resort. The project, funded with a €25 million investment, has design firm Intamin Amusement Rides and Sally Corporation, which specializes in dark game development and animation design, on board.

The ride will be approximately 700 meters long and over 12 meters high, and will be housed in an enclosed area of 4,800 square meters and a height of 16 meters. The theme park promises that the attraction will reveal dark and unexplored areas during an exhilarating journey of discovery, and will include “a journey of unexpected events in a completely immersive experience of the great treasure hunt.”

Released by Sony Pictures in February 2022, Uncharted has grossed over $400 million at the global box office. In the film, street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by veteran treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune made and lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago at the Moncada House.

“We are convinced that this new attraction with the latest technology will create wonderful moments and memories for families and friends who come to spend their holidays and leisure time at our resort,” said David Garcia, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of PortAventura World.

“The team at PortAventura World has engineered an exciting ride so fans of the game and the movie can now step into Nate and Sully’s shoes and go racing in search of… their treasure.”

“Following the massive success of ‘Uncharted,’ we are excited to see this entertainment franchise expand into new and exciting spaces,” said Assad Qizilbash, President of PlayStation Productions.

PortAventura World has recorded more than 90 million visits over its 26 year history. The resort operates five 4-star hotels and a 5-star hotel with approximately 2,500 rooms and a conference center that can accommodate up to 6,000 people. Its facilities also include three golf courses and a beach club.
