Among the guests at the premiere was Ellen Burstyn, who received an Academy Award nomination for her work in Aronofsky’s 2000 psychological drama Requiem for a Dream. Borstein and Aronofsky walked the carpet together before the screening of “The Whale.” When the director later announced that she was there during the film’s presentation, the audience erupted into applause when Burstein stood up and waved to the crowd. The acting icon will turn 90 on December 7.

“I think the first award I got was a date with Elaine when she was nominated for ‘Requiem for a Dream,’” Aronofsky told me on the carpet. “I was her plus one. This was the first time I really experienced it [award seasons]. ”
