Andrea Nachón, Ventana Sur Paz by Papu Curotto, ‘Leon’ nickname to beat

Outplay Films co-produced the award-winning Ventana Sur Primer Corte Leon, a relationship drama directed by Andrea Nachón and Babu Coroto for International Sales. You will also handle distribution in Frae.

In this Argentinian story, Julia’s friend, Barbie, dies, leaving her fight to keep their restaurant afloat and the battle for custody of Barbie’s son, whom they raised together, with the son’s father.

The synopsis reads, “In addition to the lost love for her partner, there is love for the family and the life they built together, so she struggles to recreate herself and regain that life that seemed lost.”

The film is produced by Argentine Hain Cine, and directed by Nakone and Coroto, writer and director of the film “Esteros”, winner of the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Brazilian Gramado Festival.

Premiered early in Ventana Sur last week at Primer Corte’s pix-in-post presentation, León’s film has always been a favorite in the section among the international distributors who attended the event. It went on to win Primer Corte’s biggest single prize, Canal+’s Cine+ Club Prize, which consists of a €15,000 ($15,600) prize for a French distributor who buys the film.

“We are very pleased to see that this beautiful film has been so honored. We are also thrilled to be able to collaborate again with Papu Curotto, co-director of Leon,” said Diego Carrazo Miguel, Head of International Sales & Acquisitions at Outplay. We have had international success in distributing his previous film, “Esteros”. It’s amazing to be able to work again with such talented artists.”

“Leon tells how a family goes through a state of mourning. Its strength lies in the fact that it doesn’t rejoice in pain, but rather makes the pivot in the interpersonal relationships and in the healing process of the characters showing another kind of quirky story,” producer Santiago Podesta noted at Hain Cine.

Primer Corte was dismantled during 28 November-December. It ranked second in Buenos Aires at Ventana Sur, the largest film and television market in Latin America, supported by the Cannes Film Market and Festival and the Argentine film agency INCAA.

“After discovering ‘Leon’ in Ventana Sur, we really felt this was a powerful film that covered important topics such as family rights for LGBTQ+ couples,” said Carazo Miguerrell.

He added, “Outplay Films is looking for strong LGBTQ+ stories that show the issues in society today, including the problems people have to face most when they are part of a minority. For us, highlighting this topic is the only way to give it some attention. As an international and French actor, we want to show audiences a global film in which family, love and respect are key.”

Other current titles in Outplay include David Marcial Valverde’s Argentinian animated film “The Sharpness of the Scissors”, Erblin Nushi’s “I Love You More”, an upcoming Kosovan/Albanian coming-of-age film, and Rolando Colla and Jose Burfri’s Swiss documentary ” Out of Uganda”, about four young Ugandans seeking exile from homophobia in their home country.
