Could Apple iPad 10 be a secondary display?

The iPad 10 is a great little display on its own, but can you use it as a secondary display for your Mac?

In October 2022, Apple expands its great iPad line and introduces some new models. This includes the entry-level iPad 10, which features a redesigned chassis, USB Type-C port, and more. Even though this model doesn’t have a top notch display, it still looks great and customers will enjoy whatever’s on it. Even so, there might be one question on your mind: Can this gorgeous glass panel work as a secondary display? The answer is Yes and no. It all depends on the source device you own. Here’s what you need to know.

Use your iPad 10 as a secondary display on your Mac

Screen mirroring on iPad on macOS Ventura

If you have a Mac, using the iPad 10 as a wireless secondary display is easy. That’s because Apple already bundled this feature, called Sidecar, into macOS Catalina. Simply place the two devices side by side and click screen mirroring in macOS Control Center. Your iPad 10 should appear in the list of available display outputs, assuming you’re signed in to the same Apple ID on both devices and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.

on a Windows computer

If you have a Windows PC, things get a bit more complicated since you need to rely on third-party solutions to mirror your PC content to your iPad 10. There are plenty of apps for this purpose, like Spacedesk and SplashTube. You likely won’t find it as reliable or stable as Apple’s Sidecar feature. For example, Spacedesk users have reported on online forums how the application sometimes fails to establish a connection and work. Meanwhile, Splashtop requires you to rely on a wired connection at all times. However, they are still valid solutions to get the job done if you do truly Need to copy content from your Windows PC to your iPad 10.

on iPhone

Users with recent OS versions on their iPhone and Mac can stream streaming content from iOS to macOS. Unfortunately, you cannot copy content from iPhone to iPad 10 through AirPlay. This is because iPads still don’t act as AirPlay receivers the way Macs do.

iPad 10 is a great choice for casual users. It’s capable enough to handle everyday tasks, though those expecting it to perform well as a laptop replacement will likely be disappointed. If you have recently started using this device, you may want to protect it with a case. After all, it’s a fragile product, and you wouldn’t want potential accidents to steal its new look and feel.
