Apple’s iPhone is known for its cool tricks that can make everyday tasks a little easier. The device’s ability to measure a person’s height is definitely a useful feature that can save you time, not to mention that it will likely save you from having to mark up door frames around your home.
The ability to measure height uses the LiDAR scanner found in the iPhone 14 Pro, as well as the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro. If you have one of these iPhones, this is a feature that you will definitely want to take advantage of. Sure, this may not be something you’ll need every day, but it’s much more convenient than trying to use a tape measure.
You’ll find the ability to measure heights within the Measure app. This app comes pre-installed on the latest batch of iPhones, but if you’ve previously deleted it, you can re-download it from the App Store for free.
Once you open the Measure app, position the camera so that the person you wish to measure is in the entire frame. They will need to be visible from head to toe. After a brief moment, a line should appear on the top of the person’s head, accompanied by a visual altimeter. This reading can be displayed in feet/inches or centimeters depending on your preferred unit of measurement – just head into settings if you’d like to switch.
The app will generally measure a person’s height from their feet to the top of their head. But if the person wears a hat, or has particularly thick hair, that will be included in the measurement. It can also be used to measure the height of someone while they are sitting. And if you need photographic evidence of the measurement, a quick press of the shutter button in the lower right corner of the screen will take a photo with the height measurement displayed.
So the next time you’re standing in line for a roller coaster ride and aren’t sure someone in your group exactly meets the height requirements, your iPhone offers the perfect solution. Or you can use the captured photos to create a scrapbook that tracks the growth of a young family member. Of course, you might just find this height measurement feature a fun novelty to show off to your friends and family. Whatever you use it for, it’s useful to have in your back pocket an iPhone trick.
